A IMPORTÂNCIA DA LEITURA EXTRACURRICULAR NA EDUCAÇÃO SUPERIOR: REFLEXOS NO DESEMPENHO ACADÊMICO E NO TEMPO DE ESTUDO DE ESTUDANTES DE CIÊNCIAS CONTÁBEIS

Abstract

Este estudo objetivou investigar os efeitos da leitura extracurricular sobre o desempenho acadêmico e tempo de estudo de alunos de ciências contábeis. Duas hipóteses foram formuladas a partir da literatura: (i) estudantes que leem mais possuem melhor performance acadêmica; e (ii) estudantes que leem mais estão mais associados a elevadas horas de estudo. Consistentemente com a finalidade da pesquisa, foram utilizados os dados do Exame Nacional de Desempenho de Estudantes 2015, resultando na amostra composta por 53.887 observações. Os testes de média indicaram que alunos que leram ao menos um livro obtiveram melhores performances na prova de Formação Geral e no Desempenho Total. Contudo, para a prova de Componente Específico, não houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre os desempenhos dos dois grupos. Em complementação, a Análise de Variância de Welch combinado ao teste de Games-Howell indicaram diferenças significantes entre os desempenhos dos alunos que leem mais livros e menos livros. Alunos que leem mais possuem melhores performances. Os resultados dos modelos de regressão logística multinomial corroboram os resultados dos testes estatísticos prévios, sinalizando que a leitura extracurricular tem impacto positivo no desempenho discente. Entretanto, ao adicionar variáveis independentes e de controle, o efeito é decrescido. Apesar disso, a persistência do efeito da leitura extracurricular após a inclusão de variáveis explicativas torna as evidências ainda mais robustas. Desta forma, coloca-se que a primeira hipótese do estudo é fortemente sustentada. Para testar a segunda hipótese, foram conduzidos testes qui-quadrados e Análise de Correspondência Simples. Os resultados destas técnicas apoiaram a conjectura de que há associação positiva entre a leitura extracurricular e as horas de estudo.
